Barcelona has hosted the official presentation of the 2019 World Roller Games in Barcelona, due to take place from July 5 to 14 next year.

The presentation was attended by managing director of sport for the Spanish National Sports Council (CSD), the sports commissioner for Barcelona city council Carmelo Paniagua and the President of the World Roller Games Organising Committee Ramon Basiana.

Also in attendance at CSD headquarters where the presentation took place were various athletes from the world of roller sport, including world rink hockey champion Laura Vicente.

The Games is set to feature action in various different locations, including the Palau Sant Jordi, Parc Montjuic and the Sant Jordi Club, and during the meeting many virtual images of the event’s facilities were shown.

The Games, which will feature 10 different World Championships combined into one event, bringing together more than 4,500 athletes, will also be supported by several "subvenues" in neighbouring cities and urban sites in the Catalan capital, including the seafront district, the Front Maritim.

CSD managing director Soriano said afterwards that they "cannot fail to be involved" in such an event”.

"It will be one of the great events of 2019," he claimed.

"I would like to highlight the important joint work of the Spanish and Catalan Federations, the drive of the City Council and also our role as the CSD in strengthening this project.

"This event is proof that we are stronger if we all work together."

City Council sports commissioner Carranza meanwhile, said Barcelona’s experience of hosting major events will "guarantee" the Games will be a success.

"Alongside its sports aspect, the event will combine the latest trend modalities with others that are more traditional and woven in our association fabric," she said.

"It has allowed us to work together with major federations, but also with the city’s clubs and entities.

"And not least of all, it will also leave a major legacy in the city in the form of spaces to practice these sports."

Organising Committee President Paniagua, meanwhile, promsed said it would be a "spectacular" event.

The last World Roller Games took place in 2017 in Nanjing in China after Barcelona, who were initially supposed to host, withdrew their support.

Sports on the programme next year include artistic, speed, rink hockey, inline hockey, roller freestyle and skateboarding, as well as inline alpine, inline downhill, inline aggressive and roller derby events.
