Britain's Ross Wilson got the better of China's double Paralympic champion Zhao Shuai to clinch International Table Tennis Federation Para World Championships gold in Lasko-Celje in Slovenia.

Wilson was 2-1 down and 7-4 adrift in the fourth in the men's class eight final at the Zlatorog Arena.

With three games needed for victory it looked like he would have to settle for silver but he recovered to win 12-10, 7-11, 10-12, 14-12, 14-12.

The victory avenged defeats to Zhao at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympics.

"I really can’t believe it," said Wilson, who is also the Commonwealth champion.

"I have been so logical through this whole competition and today I was just trying to focus on my game, what I was doing and how I was going to win points and then all the emotion just came out at the end.

"It's incredible.

"I think every game was deuce apart from the second one.

"He clinched the third at 12-10 but I had chances to win that as well.

"After that game I just thought I'm going to have to stick in here, just keep going and keep my strategy.

"I was down in the fourth and the fifth but fortunately I put enough pressure on him to get back in."

Other winners today included Poland's Natalia Partyka who beat Denmark's Sophie Amanda Walloe 3-1 to clinch the women's class 10 honours.

In the women's class seven final, Dutch player Kelly van Zon defeated Kubra Korkut of Turkey 3-1.

Poland's Patryk Chojnowski defeated Bulgaria's Denislav Kodjabashev 3-0 in the men's class 10 final.

Russia's Elena Prokofeva won 3-2 in the women's class 11 final against Poland's Krystyna Lysiak 3-2.
