Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan honoured a promise to taekwondo world champion Nur Tatar by attending her wedding.

Tatar won gold in the women’s under-67 kilograms class at this year’s World Championships in Muju in South Korea.

The 25-year-old also won Olympic silver at London 2012, with Erdogan asking her to deliver a major gold medal in the future.

The taekwondo player agreed but on the condition that Erdogan attend her wedding – and the President has kept his end of the bargain after Tatar’s Muju success.

She married another taekwondo athlete, Mehran Askari from Iran, with the First Lady of Turkey, Emine Erdogan, also present.

"She was very emotional and proud to have been able to fulfill her promise to the President,” the World Taekwondo website said.

"After congratulating her, the President reminded her that as she had fulfilled her promise he too would fulfill his.

"He would attend her wedding."

In her final in Muju, Tatar defeated American Paige McPherson to seal her gold medal.
