The United States wrestled back the Walker Cup after they convincingly beat Britain and Northern Ireland at the Los Angeles Country Club.

The home team came into the second and final day with a healthy 8-4 lead after dominating the first session of singles matches yesterday.

They won three of the four foursomes matches this morning to increase their advantage to 11-5.

It meant they needed just two-and-a-half points to reclaim the Walker Cup, which they lost to Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2015 edition of the biennial amateur competition.

Braden Thornberry thrashed Paul McBride 6 and 5 to put the US 12-5 in front, before Norman Xiong halved his match with Scott Gregory.

The half point moved the US to the brink of victory as they required one more to claim the title.

Stewart Hagestad was the man to guarantee an American triumph in Los Angeles as he overcame Jack Singh Brar 2 and 1.

It gave the US an unassailable 13.5-5.5 lead.

The US continued their dominance into the remaining singles contests and eventually claimed 19-7 win.

Will Zalatoris and Cameron Champ of the US had earlier won their foursomes match against David Boote and Jack Davidson 6 and 5, while Doug Ghim and Maverick McNealy beat Matthew Jordan and Robert MacIntyre 3 and 2.

Norman Xiong and Collin Morikawa, who claimed a record-breaking win yesterday, also picked up a point for the US as they ousted Connor Syme and McBride.

The only blemish on the American record came when Thornberry and Doc Redman lost 2 up to Brar and Scott Gregory.
