Monica Doria Vilarrubla claimed Andorra’s first-ever canoe slalom gold medal at continental level today as action concluded at the sport's Junior and Under-23 European Championships in Hohenlimburg. 

Doria Vilarrubla clocked a time of 2 min 0.11sec to win the junior women’s C1 final.

She crossed the finish line 1.13 seconds faster than nearest challenger Zoe Jakob, who secured a first individual medal for hosts Germany at the Championships.

Czech Republic’s Gabriela Satkova picked up the bronze medal having ended up 2.68 off the pace.

There was also success today for Spain’s Miren Lazkano, who became the under-23 women’s C1 champion in a time of 1:59.05.

"I had a really bad season, but it ended well so I am happy," she said.

"Everything went as I expected so I am very happy.

"The course was very different from the others, but I like it.

"It’s special."

Austria’s Viktoria Wolffhardt, the winner of yesterday’s under-23 women’s K1 final, finished in the silver medal position in 2:01.29.

Compatriot Nadine Weratschnig rounded out the podium in 2:02.41.

In the under-23 men’s C1 final, reigning age category world champion Marko Mirgorodsky of Slovakia came out on top in 1:44.28.

France’s Cedric Joly came second in 1:45.04, while Czech Republic’s Lukaš Rohan was third in 1:45.12.

The last event of the Championships was the junior men’s C1 and saw Vojtech Heger lead a Czech one-two ahead of Matyas Lhota.

Heger posted a time of 1:46.95, beating his compatriot by a margin of 1.36.

Junior world bronze medallist Lennard Tuchscherer of Germany came third in 1:51.36.

The 2018 Junior and Under-23 Canoe Slalom European Championships are due to take place in Slovakia’s capital Bratislava next August.
