China’s Chen Long will be bidding for a third consecutive global crown at the Badminton World Federation World Championships in Glasgow, where action is due to begin tomorrow.

The fifth seed, winner of the Olympic gold medal at Rio 2016, is set to open his campaign against Mauritius’ Georges Julien Paul on Tuesday (August 22).

Chen had a slow start to the year, falling in the second round of the All England Open and conceding a walkover in his Malaysia Open quarter-final.

However, later in April he won the Badminton Asia Championships with victory over compatriot Lin Dan in the final.

He then led China into the Sudirman Cup final and made the title match at the Australian Open before losing to India’s Srikanth Kidambi.

Lin starts his bid for glory at the Emirates Arena against Kieran Merrilees, who will be flying the flag for host nation Scotland.

The five-time world champion has played only two tournaments since beating home favourite Lee Chong Wei in the Malaysia Open final, but is also expected to be a strong contender.

Lee, a perennial bridesmaid who has three Olympic and three World Championship silver medals to his name, is the second seed in Glasgow and is due to start against France's Brice Leverdez.

He is on collision course for a quarter-final date with Chen, the man he lost to in the finals of both Rio 2016 and the last two editions of the World Championships in Copenhagen in 2014 and Jakarta in 2015.

Leverdez defeated Lee in Denmark last season, so will provide a stern opening test.

Top seed Son Wan-ho of South Korea will play Finland's Kalle Koljonen in round one with third seed and Rio 2016 bronze medallist Viktor Axelsen of Denmark meeting Japan's Takuma Ueda.

In the women's singles competition, Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi is the top seed and has received a bye through to the second round.

She will face either Denmark’s Line Kjaersfeldt or Ukraine’s Maria Ulitina on Tuesday.

This year, Yamaguchi was a semi-finalist at the Yonex All England Open and India Open and a quarter-finalist at the Malaysia Open and Singapore Open.

She also made her first final of 2017 at the Australian Open before losing to fellow Japanese and Rio 2016 bronze medallist Nozomi Okuhara in the final.

South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun is the second seed and begins her quest against either England’s Chloe Birch or India’s Tanvi Lad having received a first-round bye.

Defending champion Carolina Marin of Spain faces either Hong Kong’s Yip Pui Yin or Russia’s Natalia Perminova in the second round.

The third seed won the world title in 2014 and 2015 before claiming Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro last year.

India’s Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, who Marin beat to Rio 2016 gold, is the fourth seed and will go up against either South Korea’s Kim Hyo Min or Egypt’s Hadia Hosny in the second round.

Sindhu defeated Marin in the final of this year’s India Open in a reversal of their fortunes in Rio.
