Lara Lessmann of Germany secured victory in the women's event at the BMX Freestyle Park World Cup, held as part of the International Festival of Extreme Sports (FISE) World Series in Budapest.

The 17-year-old German produced a superb routine to top the podium with a total of 84.00 points.

Switzerland's Nikita Ducarroz scored 79.60 to take home the silver medal, while bronze went to American Hannah Roberts at the International Cycling Union (UCI) sanctioned competition.

The 16-year-old American is the current UCI BMX Freestyle Park World Cup holder but was unable to extend her advantage today.

She had qualified in pole position yesterday after her routine yielded a score of 89.40, which would have been enough for gold.

Lessmann was second in qualifying on 80.40, with Ducarroz third on 75.00.

BMX freestyle park was added to the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020 in June.

The UCI describe it as a "spectacular, crowd-pleasing discipline, which takes place on ramps with big transitions and large obstacles".

The UCI BMX Freestyle Park event took place during the FISE World Series in the Hungarian capital, which also includes skateboarding and roller skating.

The FISE World Series Leg in Budapest, which was initially a candidate in the race for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games before withdrawing earlier this year, concludes tomorrow.
