Senegal got their Women’s AfroBasket title defence off to a flying start by thrashing Guinea 105-39 in Mali today.

Astou Traore top scored for the champions at the Palais des Sports Salmatou Maïga in Bamako with 26 points to her name in the Group B clash.

From the very start, Senegal looked in control as they only conceded five points in the opening quarter, building a lead of 22.

Guinea fought back somewhat in the second only for the Senegalese defence dominate again in the third, with five points all they could muster in that period.

Cameroon, who were beaten by Senegal in the final two years ago, suffered a poor start to their championship as they lost 78-56 to Angola in Group A.

There was also a comprehensive win today for the Ivory Coast as they ended up a 104-57 success against the Central African Republic.

Egypt also had a good opening day with a 99-72 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Hosts Mali started their campaign with a 86-48 win against Tunisia while Nigeria defeated Mozambique 80-69.
