South Korea's Son Wan-ho and Japan's Akane Yamaguchi have been confirmed as the top seeds for the men's and women's singles tournaments respectively at this month's Badminton World Championships in Glasgow.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has revealed the list of the top seeds for each competition at the event in the Scottish city, due to be held at the Emirates Arena from August 21 to 27.

It comes after the worldwide governing body published the latest updated rankings.

China’s Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen have been given the number one seeding in the men's doubles, while compatriots Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen head the field in the mixed doubles.

Japan’s Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi are the top seeds in the women's doubles event.

Son comes into the World Championships in Glasgow as the man to beat in the singles event, with Olympic silver medallist Lee Cong Wei of Malaysia seeded second.

Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen, who won the bronze medal at last year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, is the third seed, while China's Shi Yuqi is fourth.

Shi's team-mate Chen Long, the reigning world and Olympic champion, will be a dangerous opponent as the fifth seed.

In the women's singles, Yamaguchi, the 20-year-old who clinched the silver medal at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, heads the field in front of 2015 World Championships bronze medallist Sung Ji-hyun of South Korea.

Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin of Spain, who will be hoping to defend the title she secured in Jakarta in 2015, is seeded third.

Pusarla V Sindhu of India, who lost out to the Spaniard in the final at Rio 2016, is fourth and Sun Yu of China is fifth.
