Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) officials have arrived in Victoria to review the Canadian city's plans for the 2022 edition.

Victoria is Canada's sole contender for the Games following Toronto's decision not to proceed with a bid.

A delegation from the CGF visited Victoria in May, but Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) President Rick Powers claimed last month that the city had not been able to provide their full plans to officials.

Bid chairman David Black, a businessman and owner of Canada's largest private publisher Black Press, was also unable to take part in the visit as he was not in the country at the time.

CGF members David Leather and Johan Baker are now present in the city for meetings tomorrow and Wednesday (August 9) but CGF chief executive David Grevemberg is unable to attend for the second visit.

Powers told insidethegames the visit will allow Victoria to work with the CGF to ensure their plans meet with the organisation's requirements.

"The intention of the visit is to review the early plans that we are putting in place to ensure that they meet with the requirements that the CGF is looking for," Powers said.

"We obviously have the venue specifications but there are different ways to meet the requirements.

"Then the particulars of the CGF partnership are of interest and how everything will work from a practical and operational viewpoint.

"The CGF inspectors had offered their assistance to all the bidding cities since they will ultimately be making a recommendation to the CGF Executive Board.

"We thought that it would be wise to have them in again to make sure that we are on the right path - one that puts us in the best position to secure the Games."

Victoria are expected to present a "scaled-down" version of previous Games, with further details due to be revealed this month.

Powers previously said that the bid has the necessary political support, but he admitted official backing has been held up by a recent deadlock within the British Columbia Provincial Government.

Officials have previously said Victoria, located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island off Canada's Pacific coast, would seek help from the rest of British Columbia as part of their bid.

The New Democrat Party (NDP) finally took office in British Columbia, where Victoria is the capital, following months of uncertainty in the region earlier this week.

John Horgan was sworn in as Premier after an agreement was reached with three Green members of the legislature, giving them a one-seat advantage over the Liberal Party of Canada.

The Liberals had initially won 43 of the 87 seats, but were defeated in a vote of confidence in June, meaning there was no ruling party.

It has been claimed an announcement over funding could be made this month.

Canada has not hosted the Commonwealth Games since Victoria staged the 1994 event and has pulled out of two recent bid races.

Halifax mounted a bid for the 2014 event but withdrew seven months before the vote in November 2007, where Scottish city Glasgow beat Nigerian capital Abuja.

Edmonton was originally in the running for 2022 but falling oil prices in early 2015 forced them to pull the plug, leaving Durban as the only candidate.

The South African city was then stripped of hosting rights due to a lack of financial guarantees, prompting a new bid race for 2022.

Birmingham and Liverpool are vying to be England’s candidate for the Games, while Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney in Australia have all expressed an interest in stepping in.
