Former Olympic and world champion Andreea Răducan has been elected President of the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.

The 33-year-old was guaranteed victory after her only rival and the current incumbent Adrian Stoica pulled out of the race.

Răducan went on to secure 42 out of a possible 43 votes to be elected President for four years until 2021.

During her career Răducan formed part of the Romanian team that won all-around Olympic gold medal at Sydney 2000.

She also won individual vault silver and the all-around title in the Australian city.

Răducan was, however, stripped of her solo all-around gold shortly after the competition concluded after testing positive for pseudoephedrine, a banned substance.

Răducan and her team insisted she had ingested the substance through tablets she had taken to treat a fever and cough.

The case was brought before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in September 2000.

While admitting she had not gained any advantage by taking the pseudoephedrine, they upheld the IOC's decision to disqualify her.

During her career Răducan also won five World Championship golds, one silver and two bronzes.

"Romania's gymnastics team did not qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio, which represented a huge setback and disappointment for our country," she said, according to International Gymnast Magazine.

"It was the first time after 48 years that the female team did not make it to the Olympics.

"Keep in mind that during the last 44 years, since Munich 1972, the female gymnastics team has won at least one medal at each edition.

"Being now the only candidate to lead this Federation, it has become clear to me that the Federation will be undergoing a profound change, some would call it a 'generational change'.

"This change will take place both on a managerial level and on a sports level."

Stoica, who ran for President of  International Gymnastics Federation in 2012 but lost to Italian Bruno Grandi, announced that he would be bowing out of the race last week after more than four decades working for the Federation.

"I will not run anymore given that there is such a desire from the younger generation to get involved," Stoica told AGERPRES.

"I've already spent 42-and-a-half years within the Romanian Gymnastics Federation, it's time to go."

Maria Fumea and Monica Red were both elected as vice-presidents.
