Hosts Denmark enjoyed success on the opening day of the European Cycling Union (UEC) Road Championships in Herning.

Pernille Mathiesen clinched victory in the women’s under-23 time trial competition in the city, as she completed the 31.5 kilometre course in a time of 41min 28sec.

The Danish rider narrowly beat her compatriot Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, who finished just 4sec adrift of the winner’s time.

Germany’s Lisa Klein completed the podium places, finishing the event 11sec off the pace in.

Denmark were denied gold in the men’s junior competition, with Norway’s Andreas Leknessund winning in a time of 39:16.23.

The host nation’s Julius Johansen claimed silver at 14sec down, while Sébastien Grignard was a further 5sec behind to win bronze.

There was an Italian one-two in the women’s junior event, with Elena Pirrone winning gold by finishing the 18.2km course in 25:18.83.

Her team-mate Letizia Paternoster finished 8sec slower to earn the silver medal, while Emma Cecilie Norsgaard Jørgensen of Denmark took bronze in 25:30.44.

Elite time trial competition and the men’s under-23 event will take place tomorrow.

Junior road races will take place on Friday (August 4), prior to the men’s under-23 and women’s elite races the next day.
