Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation (TTL) will offer 250 boxes of commemorative beer for free at special receptions during next month's Summer Universiade Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

The beer, launched by TTL in cooperation with designer Peng Hsing-Kai, will then go on sale to the wider public.

Taiwan Beer is the best-known and largest brand of beer in the country.

Produced by TTL, the range will feature different variations, including draft and fruit beer.

The product will be fermented with Taiwan’s locally produced ponlai rice.

"The purpose of the receptions is to showcase Taiwan’s speciality beverages while letting people feel the atmosphere of the sporting event," Huang Lo-ning, a member of the Taipei 2017 Organising Committee, told Focus Taiwan.

"Taiwan Beer is the best choice for that."

The packaging of the commemorative beer will heavily feature the five colours of the Universiade’s logo.

"People can drink the beer to show support for the Chinese Taipei team while watching the Universiade games," Jiang Hong-gui, the director of TTL’s division of marketing and sales, said.

Aquatics, athletics, archery, badminton, baseball, basketball and billiards are among the events that will take place at the Universiade.

Fencing, football, gymnastics, golf, judo, roller skating, table tennis and taekwondo will also be held, along with tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wushu.

Events are scheduled to held in venues in Taipei, Keelung, New Taipei, Taoyuan and Hsinchu.

Around 10,000 athletes from 150 countries are expected to take part at the multi-sport university competition.
