South Africa ended their hosting of the Hockey World League semi-final on a high as they secured a fifth place finish in the women’s competition in Johannesburg.

The finals and third place matches will take place tomorrow, leaving the classification ties as the focus of today’s action.

A penalty shot from Lilian du Plessis gave South Africa an ideal start to the women’s fifth place match against Japan.

The advantage was doubled by Tarryn Glasby in the 23rd minute of the contest, but Japan’s Yuri Nagai reduced the deficit in the 35th minute.

Japan were unable to get back on level terms at the University of the Witwatersrand, with the hosts securing a 2-1 win.

Ireland came from behind to beat India 2-1 in the seventh place classification match.

The United States and Germany meet in tomorrow’s final, while England take on Argentina in the third place playoff.

Today’s men’s matches saw Ireland claim a 1-0 victory over New Zealand to finish fifth.

The result was enough to secure Ireland a spot at the Hockey World Cup for the first time since 1990.

France ended their participation with a 3-0 victory over Egypt, which was good enough to see them end seventh.

Belgium and Germany will clash in tomorrow’s final.

Their tie will follow the third place playoff between Australia and Spain.

The top five finishers at the semi-final event all secured places at next year’s Hockey World Cup.

Japan also secured a qualification spot for the women’s event, as England have automatically received a place as hosts.
