Dr Tom Paulson have been appointed as the head of Paralympic performance support at the English Institute of Sport (EIS).

Paulson will lead the provision of Para Sport science and sport medicine services at the organisation in his new role, which he will take up on August 1.

“Over the last two cycles, the EIS has become renowned for the delivery of world class sport science and sport medicine support to Para athletes and coaches," Paulson said.

“It is an honour to have the opportunity to harness the institute’s collective expertise and work collaboratively with national governing bodies and the British Paralympic Association (BPA) to drive continued Paralympic and international success through world-leading research, innovation and practitioner development activity.”

Paulson is currently an EIS senior performance pathway scientist responsible for the creation and delivery of the Para transitions programme.

The programme operates in collaboration with discipline experts from within EIS and with the BPA.

He also delivered performance support to Britain’s wheelchair rugby team in the build-up to the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

This included the development and implementation of impairment-specific travel and recovery strategies.

Paulson previously supported a range of high performance sports at Loughborough University and then investigated the prescription of exercise for health and performance in individuals with a spinal cord injury at the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport.

“Tom will be a great addition to the EIS Science team,” said Dr Kevin Currell, EIS director of science and technical development.

"He brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise from Paralympic sports which I am sure he will be able to use as he takes up the role.

The EIS provides sport science and medicine service to 16 Paralympic sports, with the organisation having supported 93 per cent of Paralympic GB medallists at Rio 2016.
