Australia’s Christopher McHugh and Damien Schumann reached the second round stage of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Olsztyn Open in Poland following victory today.

The duo combined to good effect in Poland to beat Spain’s Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera 21-18, 21-13 yesterday and they sealed top spot in Pool F by overcoming Italy’s Adrian Carambula and Alex Ranghieri 21-18, 15-21, 15-13.

The now face Belgian pairing Dries Koekelkoren and Tom van Walle tomorrow after they saw off Martin Ermacora and Moritz Pristauz of Austria 30-28, 21-14.

Aliaksandr Dziadkou and Aliaksandr Kavalenka of Belarus won a pool for the first time in their career to book a place in the second round.

They will face the local pairing of Mariusz Prudel and Kacper Kujawiak after they won 21-12, 18-21, 21-15 against Brazil’s Pedro Solberg and Gustavo Albrecht Carvalhaes.

The United States’ John Hyden and Ryan Doherty won Pool D, with their reward being a second round match against Nicolás Capogrosso and Julian Amado Azaad.

In the women’s competition, Canada’s Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes enjoyed a 21-8, 21-15 win over the United States’ Lauren Fendrick and April Ross.

They will now take on Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Heidrich of Switzerland, after their narrow 22-20, 16-21, 15-13 success against Barbara Seixas De Freitas and Fernanda Alves of Brazil.

There will be an all-American clash in the quarter-finals, as Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat advanced by beating Taliqua Clancy and Louise Bawden of Australia 14-21, 21-19, 17-15.

Kerri Walsh Jennings and Nicole Branagh lie in wait, as the Americans overcame Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson of Canada 18-21, 21-13, 15-6.

The World Tour event is taking place a week before the FIVB World Beach Championships in Austria.

Competition in Vienna is due to be held from July 28 until August 6.
