Ilie Nastase has been banned from acting as an official at International Tennis Federation (ITF) events until the start of 2021.

The Romanian has been sanctioned following a series of controversial incidents during a Fed Cup tie with Great Britain in April.

Nastase, Romania's Fed Cup captain, was provisionally suspended over comments he made about Serena Williams' unborn baby, which the American described as racist, and for swearing at Britain's Anne Keothavong and Johanna Konta and match umpire Jaume Campistol during a match.

The incidents took place at the Tennis Club IDU in Constanta.

Nastase also launched an angry outburst at British journalist Eleanor Crooks over the publication of his remarks about Williams' baby.

It has been confirmed that Nastase will be unable to act in an official capacity, including being captain, at all ITF competitions until December 31, 2020.

“Mr Nastase was found guilty of breaching Articles a.ii.a, a.iii.a, a.iii.b, a.iv.c and a.v.b of the Fed Cup Welfare Policy under the 2017 ITF Fed Cup Regulations during the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas tie between Romania and Great Britain in Constanta in April,” an ITF statement read.

“Mr Nastase made a comment about Serena Williams’s unborn child that was highly inappropriate and racially insensitive in breach of the Introduction to the Welfare Policy, and Article a.v.b.

“Mr Nastase made advances of a sexual nature towards Anne Keothavong, the captain of the Great Britain team, in breach of Article a.iv.c.

“Mr Nastase made abusive and threatening comments to a member of the accredited press, in breach of Article a.iii.b.

“Mr Nastase made abusive and threatening comments to the match officials and to members of the Great Britain team, refused to leave the court, and deliberately interfered with the opposing team in breach of Articles a.ii.a, a.iii.a, a.iii.b and a.v.b.”

He will also be denied access to all ITF competitions until December 21, 2018, with the Nastase not permitted accreditation during this period.

Grand Slam competitions are not included as part of the sanction, as they lie outside the jurisdiction of the ITF.

Nastase, winner of the French Open in 1973, has also been fined $10,000 (£7,600/€8,600).

Nastase and the Romanian Tennis Federation now have 21 days to appeal the verdict.

Following the incidents, Wimbledon announced they would refuse to invite him into their Royal Box on Centre Court.

He was also banned by the French Open.

Women's Tennis Association chief executive Steve Simon criticised Madrid Open organisers for allowing Nastase to be part of their trophy presentation ceremony in May.

He was part of the presentation when Romanian Fed Cup team member Simona Halep was crowned champion, with Simon stating Nastase had "no place on court".
