Leeds will host a World Triathlon Series event for the third successive year in 2018, the sport's worldwide governing body has announced.

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) confirmed the city in West Yorkshire in England would stage a leg of the Series, which is also due to head to Bermuda, Abu Dhabi, Yokohama and the Gold Coast.

The event in Leeds is scheduled to take place on June 9 and 10 and comes after the city held a World Triathlon Series competition last month, which was watched by 70,000 spectators and attracted a television audience of two million on the BBC.

ITU President Marisol Casado apologised following the conclusion of the men's race as she congratulated the wrong member of the Brownlee brothers.

Alistair Brownlee finished 14 seconds in front of Jonathan, but Casado congratulated the younger of the two brothers in a letter.

"We are delighted to come back to Leeds, home of the Brownlee brothers, for the third year," Casado, who is a member of the International Olympic Committee, said.

"It is always amazing to see the support of the people of Leeds to this event, the thousands of spectators cheering on the streets, and the city showcasing its best all over the world.

"And will be again superb to have the greatest triathletes in the world competing here, along with thousands of amateur triathletes.”

Next year's World Triathlon Series begins in Abu Dhabi on March 2 to 3, before it resumes after the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games with the second event in Bermuda on April 28.

The Series then moves to Yokohama in Japan from May 12 to 13 and Leeds the following month.

The Grand Final is scheduled to take place from September 12 to 16.

"The Leeds leg of the ITU World Triathlon Series has been the standout race in the Series for the past two seasons and to be able to look forward to a third year in a row and go for a hat-trick of wins is really exciting," Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee said.

"It’s very special to be able to race in my home city and to win in front of so many fans, is incredible.”
