German ski jumper Andreas Wellinger has opted to take a three-week break from competition after suffering from knee problems since the opening event of last week's International Ski Federation (FIS) Grand Prix in Wisla.

The 21-year-old finished 19th in the individual HS134 competition in the Polish town and was part of the German quartet that came third in the team HS134 along with Andreas Wank, Karl Geiger and Stephan Leyhe.

Wellinger said he felt pain in his knee while in Wisla, where competition was held from July 13 to 15.

"Our doc diagnosed a low-grade inflammation and we decided to take a break from competitions for three weeks," he wrote on his Instagram page.

"That's why my training will be focused on therapeutic work-outs for some time."

As a result of his planned break, Wellinger will not be able to take part in his home Grand Prix in Hinterzarten from July 28 to 29.

"I'm really sad about the fact that I have to skip the competition in Hinterzarten - it's always special to jump in your home country," he added.

"Looking at the new season, I want to improve the feeling during training to be back in good shape."

Wellinger is an Olympic gold medallist having helped Germany to men’s large hill team gold at the Sochi 2014 Games.

He was joined on the team by Marinus Kraus, Severin Freund and Wank.

At this year’s FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Finnish city Lahti, Wellinger partnered Carina Vogt, Markus Eisenbichler and Svenja Würth to success in the mixed team normal hill event.

The German finished fourth in the overall standings for the 2016-2017 FIS Ski Jumping World Cup.
