The Virgin Islands have won the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) 2017 Centrobasket Championship on home soil.

The hosts won four out of their five matches to finish top of the standings, lifting the trophy at the University of the Virgin Islands in Saint Thomas.

The top three teams in the tournament have also qualified for the Women's AmeriCup 2017, due to be played in Buenos Aires in Argentina from August 6 to 13.

Mexico were forced to settle for the silver medal while Puerto Rico took bronze.

On the opening day of competition, Virgin Islands overcame Guatemala 82-58 before edging Mexico 63-55 in their second match.

A 63-56 win over The Bahamas continued their perfect start before the hosts defeated Jamaica 60-40 in their penultimate match to claim a fourth win from four.

Their only blip arrived on the final day of play when they were narrowly beaten 60-58 by Puerto Rico.

It did not matter as they had already done enough to seal success.

Natalie Day was a crucial part of the Virgin Islands' victory and was named as the Most Valuable Player of the competition.

She finished the tournament with an average of 18.6 points and 11 rebounds per game.

The Virgin Islands, Mexico and Puerto Rico will now join Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Paraguay and Venezuela in the AmeriCup event.

Canada are the reigning champions after defeating Cuba 82-66 in the final in Edmonton two years ago.
