More than 2,800 young athletes competed at the Latvian Olympic Committee's Youth Olympiad in Cēsis.

Twenty-seven Olympic sports and two non-Olympic disciplines were contested during the event - the biggest sporting competition for young athletes in the European country.

Athletes represented the 82 municipalities in Latvia with the team from capital city Riga performing best.

They sent a team of 430 and topped the standings with 77 gold, 46 silver and 67 bronze medals.

The best-performing athletes earned their place in the Latvia team for the European Youth Olympic Festival in Győr.

Action in the Hungarian city will take place between July 23 and 30.

Latvia holds the event every two years, with a senior edition taking place every four years.

The country failed to medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics in August, drawing a blank at the Summer Games for the first time since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Three Olympic golds have been won by Latvian athletes - with two claimed by BMX cyclist Māris Štrombergs.

He won the men's title at both Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Gymnast Igors Vihrovs won the men's floor title at Sydney 2000 - becoming Latvia's first Olympic champion.
