Italian climbers impressed on the first day of lead competition at the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup in Chamonix.

Stefano Ghisolfi and Marcello Bombardi produced strong and composed performances in the men’s semi-finals, which headlined today’s action.

Both athletes went close to reaching to top of a challenging climbing wall, but fell narrowly short of achieving the feat.

The Italian pairing would content themselves with being among the qualifiers for tomorrow’s final, finishing first and second in the standings.

Bombardi would end tied for second with Japan’s Keiichiro Korenaga and Belgium’s Loïc Timmermans.

There was a major surprise when Slovenia’s Domen Škofic fell early in his semi-final run, which meant the defending World Cup champion missed out on qualification to the final.

His fall provided relief to the home crowd, as France's Romain Desgranges snuck through in eighth place.

The Frenchman was victorious at the weekend in Villars and will hope to make use of his good fortune in the final tomorrow.

Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret will be targeting further success in the women’s event, following her triumph in Villars.

She was one of four climbers to reach the top of the wall in women’s qualification, along with South Korea’s Jain Kim, Austria’s Jessica Pilz and Belgium’s Anak Verhoeven.

The women’s semi-finals will take place tomorrow morning, with finals bringing the World Cup event to a close in the evening.
