Former Tour de France cyclist Robert Millar has revealed a gender transition to become a woman called Philippa York.

The British cyclist notably won the King of the Mountains classification at the 1984 Tour de France, before achieving the same feat at the Giro d’Italia in 1987, also finishing second overall in the race.

The 58-year-old has stated she has been going through the transition since 2000, but has now opted to go public.

York confirmed the transition on cyclingnews.com, where she had been writing pieces under the name of Millar.

She will join ITV4’s coverage of the 2017 edition of the Tour de France in the coming days, where she will provide analysis during key mountain stages.

“As much as I've guarded my privacy over the years there are a few, I believe obvious, reasons to why I haven't had a public "image" since I transitioned,” York wrote on cyclingnews.

“Gratifyingly, times have moved on from 10 years ago when my family, friends and I were subjected to the archaic views and prejudice that some people and certain sections of the tabloid media held.

“Thankfully gender issues are no longer a subject of such ignorance and intolerance, there's a much better acceptance and understanding."

The Tour de France is due to conclude on July 23 in Paris.
