Dan Evans has “let himself down” following a failed drugs test, according to his team-mate and world number one Sir Andy Murray.

On June 23, Evans, who was a member of Great Britain’s Davis Cup winning team in 2015 alongside Murray, admitted that he had tested positive for cocaine following a test at the Barcelona Open on April 24.

The 27-year-old is currently serving a provisional suspension from tennis as he awaits to hear the length of his ban, which could be up to four years.

Speaking to The Times, Murray, who started his men’s singles title defence at the Wimbledon Championships with a straight sets win over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik yesterday, said his colleague has “blown” his reputation and career.

“He has made poor decisions in the past and he made another really bad one there,” the Olympic men’s singles champion from London 2012 and Rio 2016 said.

“He has let himself down and all of the people that help him.

“I’m sure his team and family will be extremely disappointed with what he’s done.

“It will be a difficult time for him, but he put himself in that position.”

Evans’ suspension has come at a time when he was seen to be building into prime form, having reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time when he did so at this year’s Australian Open.

In March, he achieved his highest career ranking of 41, but has now dropped down to 54th.
