Ilkka Jarva, the head coach of the Czech Republic cross-country skiing team, has refused to set concrete targets for Pyeongchang 2018 as he continues to build towards the start of the new season.

Finland's Jarva was tasked with revitalising the fortunes of the Czech team after being appointed head coach in May.

He spent the past 13 years helping to develop Finland's junior athletes and will spend around 150 days a year with the Czech team.

However, when asked in an interview, published on the International Ski Federation website, whether he had set specific targets for the next year's Games, Jarva was wary of outlining any firm expectations.

"No, it's too early [to set targets]," said Jarva.

"My job is to develop the Czech cross-country skiing system as such but I am also responsible for results of the national team.

"Our goals should be top six in individual competitions and ladies and men should aim at top eight in the relays, if not at the Olympic Games then at the World Ski Championships in Seefeld."

The Czech team are viewed to be undergoing a generational change, with several of their leading athletes bringing their careers to a close.

This includes Lukas Bauer, whose career came to an end at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 season.

Bauer won 18 World Cup races, two World Championship silvers and three Olympic medals.

He secured a silver medal at Turin 2006, before winning two bronzes at Vancouver 2010.

In his role, Jarva is being supported by local coaches who will be responsible for the day-to-day work with athletes and so far he is pleased with their relationship.

"It has been very good," added Jarva.

"Both guys are very enthusiastic and hard working.

"I like their approach to coaching, they are not afraid of new things and they have a good attitude to athletes.

"They also have very good university education and they have been improving their English skills in an active way.

"We have a lot of fun during camps, which is also very important."
