Denis Gargaud Chanut of France, the Rio 2016 Olympic Games C1 champion, qualified for the semi-finals in the fastest time on day one of the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Slalom World Cup leg in Markleeberg.

After returning to the World Cup scene last week, Gargaud-Chanut appeared to be back to his best, qualifying first in 1 min 35.50sec.

“It was a good first run, I enjoyed the wind because I’m quite used to it in Marseille,” said Gargaud-Chanut.

“I think the course is just challenging enough.

"I was a little bit disappointed last week because I thought the course was a little bit too easy, but that is not why I did not succeed.

“I just like trickier courses like this.”

Slovenia’s Benjamin Savsek qualified in second in 1:35.86 with third place going to Adam Burgess of Great Britain in 1:36.32.

In the men’s K1 Germany’s Alexander Grimm delighted his home crowd by qualifying fastest in 1:29.92, just ahead of Australia’s Lucien Delfour in 1:30.02.

The Czech Republic’s Vit Prindis has won gold in both men's K1 World Cup events so far this season in Prague and Augsburg respectively.

However, he qualified in 15th place today after finishing 3.70 behind Grimm.

Britain's Mallory Franklin continued her consistent 2017 season by qualifying fastest in the women’s K1.

Her time of 1:41.38 saw her finish in front of last weekend’s gold medallist in Augsburg, Ricarda Funk of Germany.

Funk picked up a two-second penalty to push her time back to 1:41.56.

Franklin was also impressive in the C1 event after finishing second today.

Her time of 1:52.34 could only be beaten by Spain's Núria Vilarrubla, who posted 1:49.53 to top the standings.

Racing in Germany is set to continue tomorrow and conclude on Sunday (July 2).
