Dutchman Mike Schloesser won a thrilling shoot-off against Denmark's Stephan Hansen to clinch the men's individual compound gold medal at the Archery World Cup in Salt Lake City.

Schloesser and Hansen, the world number one, were locked in a tight battle throughout their encounter at the Easton Salt Lake Archery Centre.

After both competitors recorded a score of 147 points, the Dutchman shot closest to the centre of the target to ensure he topped the podium in dramatic fashion.

A shoot-off also decided the destination of the bronze medal as American Bridger Deaton defeated Mexico's Rodolfo Gonzalez.

"I’ve been in a lot of shoot-offs lately, especially against Stephan, and normally an X on the line isn’t good enough so, even though it was a really good arrow, I was still thinking there was a chance he could beat it because he’s a really great archer as well," the 23-year-old Schloesser, the 2013 world champion, said.

"I waited until he shot to see if I had won and then I was super excited about it."

Spaniard Andrea Marcos took the women's individual honours as she shocked Denmark's Sarah Sonnichsen, the world number two, with a narrow 145-143 triumph.

Colombia's Sara Lopez, the current world number one, would have been disappointed not to be competing for gold but she ended the event on a positive note by earning the bronze medal as she beat Song Yun-soo of South Korea 146-145.

South Korea won both the men's and women's compound titles - the first time they had ever achieved the feat at an Archery World Cup event.

The South Korean men's team, comprised of Kim Jong-ho, Hong Sung-ho and Choi Yong-hee narrowly overcame the Italian trio of Federico Pagnoni, Alberto Simonelli and Sergio Pagni 230-229.

France claimed the bronze medal with a 231-229 win against El Salvador.

The women's final also went to a shoot-off as South Korea and The Netherlands could not be separated at 229-229.

Song, So Chae-won and Choi Bomin held their nerve to deliver the gold medal for South Korea at the expense of the Dutch, represented by Martine Couwenberg, Inge van Caspel and Sanne de Laat.

The United States sealed bronze by beating Chinese Taipei 223-218.

Colombia secured the mixed team honours as Lopez and Daniel Munoz ousted Linda Ochoa-Anderson and Gonzalez 157-152, while South Korea defeated Italy 154-152 for bronze.

The event is due to conclue tomorrow with finals in the recurve discipline.
