Malaysia secured a place at next year's Hockey World Cup as they stunned India with a 3-2 victory at the World League semi-final event in London today.

The Malaysian team made their Indian opponents pay for a series of uncharacteristic errors on their way to a shock win at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Malaysia were 2-0 up by the 20th minute as Razie Rahim and Tengku Tajuddin both converted penalty corners.

Ramandeep Singh then scored a quick-fire brace to restore parity before Rahim struck again in the second half to ensure his side set up a semi-final meeting with Olympic champions Argentina.

The Rio 2016 gold medallists guaranteed their 2018 World Cup berth as they edged Pakistan 3-1.

Gonzalo Peillat's goal sandwiched in between two efforts from Maico Casella gave the South American side a commanding lead, with Shan Ali's 49th minute strike proving to be little more than a consolation.

The Netherlands were in impressive form as they followed Argentina and Malaysia into the semi-finals by thrashing China 7-0.

Mirco Pruijser chipped in with two goals, while Robbert Kemperman, Jonas de Geus, Billy Bakker, Bjorn Kellerman and Tristan Algera all got on the scoresheet in a rampant display from the Dutch team.

The Netherlands will play England in the last four after the host nation emerged from a thrilling battle with Canada on the right side of a 4-2 scoreline.

The result saw England also seal a berth at the 2018 World Cup in India.

The semi-finals are due to be held on Saturday (June 24).

In the women's event, being staged in Brussels, Spain bounced back from their defeat to New Zealand yesterday by beating Malaysia 3-1 in Pool B.

Australia consolidated their position at the summit of the group as Georgina Morgan's penalty corner was enough to earn a 1-0 victory over the host nation at the Stade Fallon.

Both Pool A matches were draws as China and Scotland could not be separated at 1-1, while South Korea's clash with Italy ended goalless.

Action is scheduled to resume on Saturday.
