World champions Germany were held to a 1-1 draw by Chile as both sides took a step closer to sealing a place in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez became Chile's record goalscorer as he gave the Copa América holders the lead in the sixth minute at the Kazan Arena.

Germany, who were criticised before the tournament for sending a weakened team to Russia, equalised four minutes beofre the break thanks to Lars Stindl.

Neither side could find a winner in a drab second half, with both teams seemingly settling for a point.

In the other Group B match to take place today, Australia and Cameroon took a share of the spoils as their match also finished 1-1.

Chile remain top of the group on four points, in front of Germany, who have the same total.

They will both qualify for the last four with a win or a draw in their final group match.

Chile signalled their intention from the outset as Sanchez scored his 38th international goal in the early stages.

The South Americans went in search of a second but were pegged back after 41 minutes when Stindl converted a pinpoint Jonas Hector cross.

Chances were few and far between after the restart as the encounter petered out into a draw.

Australia and Cameroon came into their contest eager to register their first win of the tournament after both sides lost their opening matches.

André-Frank Zambo Anguiss put the African champions ahead in first-half stoppage team with a deft lob over Australian goalkeeper Matthew Ryan.

Australia equalised on the hour mark through Mark Milligan's penalty after Alex Gersbach was brought down in the area.

That was how it stayed as the contest petered out into a draw which does neither side's hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals any favours.

The tournament resumes on Saturday (June 24) with the last matches in Group A.

Mexico play Russia at the Kazan Arena, while New Zealand entertain Portugal at the Saint Petersburg Stadium.
