The Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) has announced the formation of a new Athlete Commission for the 2017 to 2020 cycle.

Six candidates were nominated by OCI members, with the governing body's Executive Board deciding that all should be given a seat.

They are hurdler Derval O'Rourke, dressage rider Judy Reynolds, hockey's David Harte, skier Shane O'Connor, swimmer Melanie Nocher and triathlete Gavin Noble.

"The OCI Executive Board agreed that the Athlete Commission would benefit from all six candidates who represent a mix of summer individual/team and winter sports and so all six were appointed," an OCI statement said.

Three more Olympians were also added to the Commission by the Executive Board to bring the number up to nine - athletes David Gillick and James Nolan and boxer Kenneth Egan.

The role of the Commission is to advise the OCI Executive Committee on all athlete related matters and to ensure that the voice of Irish athletes is heard.

A chair of the Commission will be appointed when the new body meets for the first time later this month.

"The new Athlete Commission will have a very important role in the future decision making of the OCI," said OCI President Sarah Keane.

"The OCI Executive Committee is very grateful that so many talented Olympians have agreed to make themselves available to participate in this Commission and to speak on behalf of all Irish Olympians.

"We want to ensure that athletes have a strong voice at the OCI Board table and this Commission will allow that to happen.

"I look forward to working with the Commission over the coming four years."

Keane was elected as OCI President in February, replacing Patrick Hickey at an Extraordinary General Assembly in Dublin.

Hickey was arrested during a dawn raid during Rio 2016 last August and charged with ticketing offences.

He denies all of the allegations and was allowed to leave Brazil for medical reasons.
