Pyeongchang 2018 has announced that South Korean pop sensation Taeyang has become an honorary ambassador for next year's Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The 29-year-old was first thrust into the spotlight in 2006 as part of boy band Big Bang.

Big Bang won the Best Worldwide Act prize at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards and were the first Korean act to be named on two Forbes Magazine lists - the Celebrity 100 and the 30 under-30 most influential musicians in the world.

Following the band's huge success and the awards, Taeyang forged a career as a solo artist and picked up some notable accolades along the way.

They include best male artist at the Asian Music Awards in 2014 and song of the year at the 2015 Golden Disc Awards for "Eyes, Nose, Lips".

"I am honoured to have been chosen as an ambassador for the Pyeongchang 2018 Games," he said.

"To be able to help promote the Games across Korea and to all my fans around the world makes me very proud and I am looking forward to being part of this huge celebration of sports and culture in my country."

Taeyang will promote the Games and will also pen a song dedicated to Pyeongchang 2018.

"Korean pop has a huge following in Korea and around the world so we are very happy to have Taeyang as an ambassador for the Games," said Pyeongchang 2018 President Lee Hee-beom.

"He will help us reach out to a younger audience that we want to engage and excite around winter sports."

Taeyang is the latest appointment as an honorary ambassador.

Leading South Korean actors Kim Woo-bin and Lee Min-ho, double Olympic speed skating champion Lee Sang-hwa and opera singer Sumi Jo have all been given the role.

South Korean Olympic skating champions Seung-hoon Lee, Seung-hi Park and Tae-bum Mo, and Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn of the United States, were also given ambassadorial duties.

The Winter Olympics are due to take place from February 9 to 25.
