Olympic silver medallists Spain suffered a shock defeat to Czech Republic as action resumed at the EuroBasket Women today, but the host nation still went out.

The Spanish side had won their opening two contests but were unable to make it a third straight victory as they were beaten 67-63 in Group A at the Hradec Králové Arena.

Kia Niema Vaughn inspired the home side to an impressive win as she scored 18 of her team's points, while Sancho Lyttle was the top performer for Spain with 17.

It was Spain's first loss of the competition but they still managed to finish top of the group as the opening phase ended.

The Czech win was not enough to keep them in the tournament as they still finished last after two prior defeats.

The winners of each group automatically advance to the quarter-finals, while the second and third-place teams will face a further qualification match tomorrow.

In the other match in Group A, Ukraine beat Hungary 84-72 at the same venue to finish second and third respectively.

Elsewhere, Turkey preserved their unbeaten record in Group B as they picked up their third victory in a row, sweeping aside Belarus 88-74 to finish on top.

Belarus have gone out, with Italy beating Slovakia 68-61 to finish second in front of their opponents.
