Olympic champions Argentina surged to the summit of Pool A as they thrashed China at the Hockey World League semi-final event in London.

Argentina maintained their unbeaten start to the tournament, a qualifier for the World Cup in India, with a comprehensive 10-0 victory over their Chinese opponents at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The Rio 2016 gold medallists were in formidable form and proved far too strong for a hapless Chinese side.

Gonzalo Peillat, whose two goals helped Argentina salvage a point from their clash with England yesterday, was again the star of the show as he netted a hat-trick.

Lucas Vila chipped in with two, while Matias Paredes, Leandro Tolini, Manuel Brunet, Agustin Bugallo and Juan Lopez also got their names on the scoresheet.

England will retake first position in the group if they overcome South Korea tomorrow as Argentina are not due to be in action.

In the other match in the pool, Malaysia picked up their first win of the event by narrowly edging South Korea 1-0.

The Netherlands remain second in Pool B, behind India, after they edged past Canada 3-1.

Mink van der Meerden opened the scoring for the Dutch side after 14 minutes as he converted a penalty corner, but Canada hit back to equalise through Scott Tupper.

It proved to be a fleeting moment of success for Canada, however, as goals from Jorrit Croon and Mirco Pruijser handed The Netherlands their third straight win.

In the same group, Pakistan claimed their first win as they dispatched Scotland 3-1.

The tournament continues tomorrow as Scotland play Canada, India take on The Netherlands and China square off against Malaysia.

Day six then concludes when England entertain South Korea.
