The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has celebrated its 85th birthday.

The governing body was founded on June 18, 1932 in Swiss city Geneva with eight original members: Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland.

In 1934, FIBA was recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the governing body now boasts 213 member countries.

Basketball made its Olympic debut at the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin, where the United States won the men's gold medal.

The women's game debuted at the Montreal 1976 Olympics, where the Soviet Union were successful.

A historic event came for FIBA last week when it was confirmed by the IOC that 3x3 basketball will make its Games debut at Tokyo 2020.

The discipline took centre stage as part of the birthday celebrations at FIBA's House of Basketball headquarters in Mies in Switzerland.

It was contested as part of the FIBA Open, an annual event which takes place on the weekend closest to the organisation's anniversary.

The event brings together basketball players and fans from Switzerland, France and beyond to enjoy the sport in a "friendly and relaxed atmosphere".

This year, 520 players from 130 teams took part in categories including men's, women's, youth, mixed and wheelchair.

On September 30, FIBA's induction ceremony for its Hall of Fame will be themed on the 85-year milestone.
