Australia's Rohan Dennis claimed victory on the closing stage of the 2017 Tour de Suisse as Simon Spilak was confirmed as the overall winner of the race.

Dennis triumphed in the opening time trial of the race, which was contested over a short distance of six kilometres.

The BMC Racing rider would bookend the nine stage event, as he emerged with the fastest time today as well over the longer 28.6km course in Schaffhausen.

He finished in a time of 36min and 31sec.

Switzerland's Stefan Küng finished with the second fastest time, finishing 29 seconds off the pace.

Damiano Caruso, who began in second place in the general classification, was the third fastest finisher after clocking 36:18.

The Italian was 52 seconds behind Slovenia's Spilak heading into the stage, but was only able to claw back four seconds on his rival.

Spilak, who rides for Katusha-Alpecin, sealed the overall classification at the International Cycling Union World Tour race as a result.

Caruso ended the race 42sec down, with the Netherlands' Steven Kruijswijk finishing in third position on 1min 8sec.

The WorldTour will resume with the iconic Tour de France on July 1, with the three week race being the second Grand Tour of the season.
