Brazil claimed two gold medals on the penultimate day of the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Prix in Cancun.

Marcelo Contini secured his maiden Grand Prix title after an impressive series of performances at the Polifórum Benito Juárez in the men's under-73 kilogram event.

He prevailed by ippon against Israel’s rising star Tohar Butbul in a well fought gold medal match in Mexico.

Peru’s Alonso Wong prevailed in the first bronze medal match, beating Spain’s Javier Ramirez with two waza-ari scores.

The podium was completed by the United States’ Alexander Turner, as he overcame the challenge of home favourite Eduardo Araujo with an ippon.

Ketleyn Quadros added to Brazil’s gold medal tally by edging out Britain’s Amy Livesey in the women’s under-63kg competition.

She triumphed in the gold medal match after two minutes, securing a victory by ippon.

Venezuela’s Anriquelis Barrios won the opening bronze medal match by beating top seed Andreja Leski of Slovenia by a waza-ari score.

Britain’s Lubjana Piovesana clinched the final bronze, winning her contest with Germany's Vivian Herrmann by ippon.

Piovesana’s compatriot Sally Conway would be forced to settle for the silver medal in the women’s under-70kg event.

The Rio 2016 bronze medallist received three shido penalties during her gold medal clash with Maria Bernabeu, resulting in the Spaniard winning the Grand Prix title.

Conway would be joined by fellow Briton Gemma Howell on the podium, as she overcame Brazil’s Barbara Timo by ippon.

Venezuela’s Elvismar Rodríguez clinched the final bronze medal on offer, as Roxane Taeymans of Belgium received a penalty in a golden score period.

The final gold medal of the day was earned by Argentina’s Emmanuel Lucenti, who triumphed in the men’s 81kg division final against Etienne Briand of Canada.

Victor Penalber won the first bronze medal as the Brazilian achieved two waza-ari scores against the United States’ Jack Hatton.

The podium was rounded off by Hungary’s Attila Ungvari, who won his bronze medal match with Montenegro’s Srdjan Mrvaljevic by ippon.

Five divisions will be in action tomorrow as the Grand Prix draws to a close.
