Spanish duo Damian Quintero and Sandra Sanchez won the men's and women's kata titles respectively on home soil at the 2017 Karate 1-Series A opener in Toledo.

Quintero, who last month won an eighth gold medal at the European Karate Championships in Kocaeli in Turkey, was once again the dominant figure in the men's event at the Sports Hall Javier Lozano Cid.

He defeated Chris Cheng Tsz Man of Hong Kong 4-1 in the final as "Karate Day", a celebration of the sport, was marked around the world.

The Spaniard beat China's Shike Mu 5-0 in the semi-finals while Tsz got the better of another Spaniard, Manuel Carbonell, 5-0 in his last four contest.

Both losing semi-finalists took home bronze medals.

Sanchez then completed the double for the hosts with her victory.

The 35-year-old won her third consecutive continental crown in Kocaeli last month and defeated compatriot Raquel Roy 5-0 in the final in Toledo.

Bronze medals were won by Grace Lau Mo Sheung of Hong Kong, who only narrowly lost to Sanchez, 3-2, in their semi-final.

Roy, meanwhile, eased into the gold medal contest with a 5-0 win over Hong Kong's Tung Yee Yin.

Series A complements the top tier Karate 1-Premier League with four events scheduled this year.

More than 800 competitors from 67 countries are registered for the Toledo competition, with action due to conclude tomorrow with the finals of the kumite categories.

After Toledo, the Karate 1-Series A season will stop in Istanbul, Salzburg and Okinawa.
