Hosts England will face the challenge of Olympic gold medallists Argentina in the pool phase of the first Hockey World League (HWL) semi-final, which will begin tomorrow.

England and Argentina, the world number one ranked team, will also meet China, Malaysia and South Korea in Pool A in London's Olympic Park.

European champions The Netherlands go up against India, Pakistan, Scotland and Canada in Pool B.

Action will begin tomorrow with Argentina taking on South Korea, before England meet China.

India and Scotland will clash in the first Pool B game, while the Netherlands take on Pakistan.

Pool action will draw to a close on June 20, with the top four teams in each group advancing to the quarter-finals, which will be held two days later.

The semi-finals are scheduled for June 24, with the final and third place playoff taking place the following day.

The top four teams at the tournament will secure their places at the HWL Final, but it will depend on India’s performance.

Should they miss out on the semi-finals in London, only three teams will reach the HWL Final.

India are assured of taking part in the Final, with the Asian nation set to host the event in Bhubaneswar from December 1 to 10.

The second men’s semi-final will be held between July 8 to 23 at the Wits Hockey Club in Johannesburg.

Defending champions Australia will play New Zealand in Pool A of the men’s competition.

The teams will be joined by Spain, Japan and France in the pool.

Rio 2016 silver medallists Belgium will take on Germany, reigning African champions South Africa, Ireland and Egypt in Pool B.

The HWL, along with the Champions Trophy, has been axed from the FIH’s calendar from 2018 onwards in favour of a new home and away competition, which will come into effect in 2019.
