Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei will aim to defend his men’s Badminton World Federation (BWF) Indonesian Open title when the competition begins tomorrow.

Qualification will be the focus of attention on the opening day of the event, which is taking place at the Jakarta Convention Center.

Lee has already discovered his first round opponent, with home favourite Tommy Sugiarto set to provide the first hurdle for the defending champion.

Tournament second seed Son Wan Ho of South Korea will take on India’s Sai Praneeth in the other half of the men’s draw.

Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying will begin the defence of her women’s title with a match against Japan’s Minatsu Mitani, while second seed Carolina Marin of Spain will meet China’s Chen Xiaoxin.

South Korea’s Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong will hope to retain their men’s doubles title, while Japan’s Olympic champions Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi will begin as the holders in the women’s event.

China’s Xu Chen and Ma Jin secured the mixed doubles title in 2016.

The competition, which is a World Superseries Premier event,  will begin tomorrow and will draw to a close with the finals next Sunday (June 18).
