Torben Grimmel of Denmark claimed his fifth career International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup gold medal today with victory in the men's 50 metres rifle prone event.

The 41-year-old sealed the win with two scores of 10.7 points in his final series at the Gabala Shooting Club in Azerbaijan.

His overall score of 249.8 points levelled the world record set by Japan’s Yamashita Toshikazu at this year’s first World Cup stage in New Delhi in India.

Grimmel faced fierce competition throughout from Belarus’ Yury Shcherbatsevich, a three-time Olympian whose only previous World Cup medal came in Bangkok in 2004.

Shcherbatsevich shot consistently for the whole final, matching Grimmel’s score at the end of the eighth series, but he failed to beat him in the ninth and conclusive tenth.

The Belarusian shooter finished in silver medal position on 248.9 points.

Belgium’s Lionel Cox took third on 227.9 points, securing his second career World Cup medal after also winning bronze in Changwon in South Korea in 2013.
