More than 400 athletes have entered the season's fifth International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup for rifle and pistol shooters, which gets underway in Gabala tomorrow.

The event at the Gabala Shooting Club in the Azerbaijani city will be the last regular rifle and pistol shooting competition of the season, with the World Cup Final scheduled for New Delhi from October 23 to 30.

Competition in Gabala begins tomorrow with qualification across the various categories, as well as the finals of the 10 metre air rifle for women and men.

A total of 430 shooters are braced to participate in the event, which comes after World Cups in New Delhi, Acapulco, Larnaca and Munich.

It will be the second ISSF World Cup stage hosted at the venue, after the one held in August 2015.

The Gabala Shooting Club also staged the World Cup Final in 2014 and the ISSF Junior World Cup in 2016.

The confirmed entrants represent 45 National Olympic Committees, according to the ISSF.

Action on the range will come amid continued debate regarding the ISSF's proposed changes to their programme at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

In order to meet International Olympic Committee (IOC) criteria for gender equality, the ISSF has proposed removing three events for men only from the schedule.

They want to replace the double trap, 50 metre rifle prone and 50m pistol with mixed team competitions in trap, 10m air rifle and 10m air pistol.

The plan has not been universally popular, however.

It is set to be discussed as the only agenda item at the key IOC Executive Board meeting regarding additional disciplines and changes in Lausanne on Friday (June 9).
