Lukashenko, the President of the country, had his candidacy for the post proposed by Sergei Makarenko, a canoeing Olympic gold medallist for the Soviet Union at Rome 1960. 

The decision was taken at the country's National Olympic Assembly.

Lukashenko was unopposed.

The 62-year-old, who has ruled the former Soviet Republic since 1994, first assumed the role of NOC Belarus President in 1997.

Lukashenko has been the subject of travel economic sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United States for alleged human rights violations off and on since 2006.

Following his re-election as head of the NOC Belarus, Lukashenko called for an improvement in the performance of the nation's athletes.

Belarus won a total of nine Olympic medals at Rio 2016, only one of which was gold.

That was won by Uladzislau Hancharou in the men's trampoline.

It was their worst performance since they made their debut as an independent nation at Atlanta 1996.  

"A number of pending issues still exists in the industry," Lukashenko said according to the official Belarus Government news agency BelTA.

"Sport as a crucial ideological instrument of the state policy did not become the source of national pride and inspiration for Belorussians.

"Everything is done for athletes in our country, but the results could be better.

"In general, the performance of Belarus' team at the Olympic Games was very poor."

Andrei Astashevich, Sergei Repkin and Semyon Shapiro, also named chairman of the Belarusian Ice Hockey Association, were elected vice-presidents.

The new Executive Committee will include Rio 2016 silver and Beijing 2008 bronze hammer medallist Ivan Tsikhan, London 2012 bronze medal winning gymnast Liubou Charkashyna and Yuri Shevtsov, winner of an Olympic handball gold medal for the Soviet Union at Seoul 1988.

Dmitry Baskov, Valentin Borovok, Dmitry Pinevich, Sergei Rumas, Oleg Shepel and Anton Yuspa complete the Executive Committee.

Three-time Olympic wrestling champion Alexander Medved, Sydney 2000 discus champion Ellina Zvereva and team foil gold medallist at Seoul 1988 Alexander Romankov were all approved as honorary members of the NOC Belarus.

Participants of the Assembly discussed issues relating to the introduction of amendments and additions to the Charter of the NOC Belarus.

Preparations of Belorussian athletes for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang and Tokyo 2020 were also debated.

Minsk is also preparing to host the the 2019 European Games after Lukashenko made the commitment to step in as host last year.
