A number of activities have been planned by the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOSC) to celebrate Olympic Day next month.

RNOSC are set to hold a week of events to mark the day, which falls on June 23, in Gatagara, Huye district and capital city Kigali.

The organisation have said they will stage several different activities during the week running from Olympic Day to June 27.

They have partnered with Kids Play International, a non-profit organisation established to use sport and the Olympic Values to promote gender equality in communities and areas affected by the mass genocide in 1994.

It is thought around a million people were killed in the genocide across the country.

Eugene Nzabanterura, who works as an adviser to RNOSC, told allAfrica that the week would bring great benefit to the communities.

"The week will be dedicated to demonstrating the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and fair play so as to create powerful social change for the people in communities," he said.

National OIympic Committees all over the world are due to celebrate Olympic Day.

RNOSC usually hold an Olympic Day run to help mark the day, which celebrates the founding of International Olympic Committee and the modern Olympic Movement by Pierre de Coubertain in 1894.

Last year, a series of athletics events took place at the Huye District in Southern Province.

Rwanda has competed at every Summer Olympic Games since Los Angeles 1984 but has never won a medal.

At Rio 2016 in August, the country sent a team of seven athletes who competed in athletics, cycling and swimming.

Ambroise Uwiragiye and Claudette Mukasakindi competed in the men's and women's marathons respectively, with Salome Nyirarukundo racing in the women's 10,000 metres.

Cyclists Adrien Niyonshuti and Nathan Byukusenge took part in the men's road race and cross-country respectively, with Eloi Imaniraguha and Johanna Umurungi competing in the pool.

Imaniraguha raced in the men's 50m freestyle with Umurungi in action in the women's 100m butterfly.
