Ona Carbonell made a good start to the fifth leg of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Synchronised Swimming World Series in home water today.

The Spaniard who won two medals at the London 2012 Olympics topped the standings in the preliminary solo technical routine at the Club Natacion Metropole of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with her score of 90.9702 points.

She was closely followed by Ukrainian Anna Voloshyna, who scored 98.9129, while Hungary’s Szofi Kiss took up third spot with 78.0242.

Despite her performance, Carbonell admitted she was not entirely happy with her day’s work.

“I am happy, but I must improve some details,” she said afterwards.

Carbonell did not feature for Spain in the preliminary team technical routine and without her experience, the hosts had to settle for second place.

Topping the standings were Ukraine with a score of 90.6050, which put them 2.1000 above the Spanish team.

Kazakhstan completed the preliminary top three with a tally of 78.6295.

Tomorrow will see the opening rounds of the duet technical and mixed technical routines.

Alongside these, the finals of the free combination, free solo and team free routine will be held.

Action in Spain will continue until Sunday (May 28).
