For the first time in 32 years, Italy have won on home soil as they topped the podium at the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) Nations Cup Jumping Division One event in Rome.

Despite recording a time fault on Ensor de Litrange, Lorenzo de Luca’s ride was good enough to secure an Italian success as they finished on nine faults at the Piazza di Siena.

This put them four ahead of The Netherlands, who were level with their hosts at the halfway stage, while Ireland and Spain shared third place with 17 faults each.

The victory sparked jubilant celebrations among the Italians and Alberto Zorzi, who had a double-clear round day on Fair Light van T Heike, said ending the 32 year wait was great.

“We were all riding well.” The 28-year-old said.

“We really wanted this win today and we all made it happen.”

In the overall standings after three stages of the competition, Italy’s 100 points from today means they are now in fourth place on 170.

France, who came equal fifth with Sweden in Rome, are top of the table on 247.5.

The Swedish team are 50 points behind in second while Spain are sitting in third place on 175.

St Gallen in Switzerland will host the next stage of competition on June 2.
