Kieran Dowell scored the winning goal in the 56^th minute, latching onto a Jonjoe Kenny cross from the right flank to slot the ball home from inside the penalty area at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.

Ademola Lookman's effort off the post in the 72nd minute was the closest England came to doubling their lead, but they ultimately did not need to do so as they moved above South Korea into first place on seven points.

South Korea qualified as the runners-up on six points, while Argentina put themselves in contention to be one of the four best third-place finishers after thrashing Guinea at the Jeju World Cup Stadium.

Marcelo Torres tapped-in to open the scoring in the 33^rd minute after good work from Santiago Colombatto.

Lautaro Martinez registered a superb second goal 10 minutes later, controlling on his chest before curling into the top corner from the edge of the area, and Matias Zaracho added a third shortly after the break.

Ezequiel Ponce, with his very first touch, sent a free-kick to the back post to pick out Marcos Senesi for the fourth in the 74^th minute.

A clever free-kick then got Martinez his second and Argentina’s fifth.

The South Americans must now hope three points and a goal difference of plus-one is enough to progress.

Group B also reached its conclusion today as Venezuela guaranteed first place thanks to a 1-0 win over Mexico at the Suwon World Cup Stadium.

Sergio Córdova’s 33^rd-minute goal, his fourth of the tournament, proved decisive with the forward shaking off his marker, dribbling past goalkeeper Abraham Romero and slotting the ball home to maintain his country's 100 per cent record. 

The result still ensured Mexico their qualification for the last-16 as runners-up with four points, due to having a superior goal difference over Germany.

Germany beat Vanuatu 3-2 at the Jeju World Cup Stadium today, but ended up on a goal difference of minus-one to Mexico’s zero.

They could still advance to the knockout stage as one of the four best third-place finishers but must await the completion of Groups C, D, E and F to learn their fate.

Malcolm Badu put Germany ahead against Vanuatu in the 27^th minute, scoring their first goal of the tournament.

A second came shortly after with a quick throw-in allowing Suat Serdar to square for Fabian Reese's tap-in.

Germany had the chance to put the game to bed in the 39^th minute when a penalty was confirmed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), but Serdar’s effort was saved by Dick Taiwia in the Vanuatu goal. 

However, they did get their third goal five minutes after half-time through Emmanuel Iyoha before Bong Kalo capitalised on a spill from Germany goalkeeper Svend Brodersen to reduce the deficit back down to two.  

Kalo doubled his tally in the 77^th minute with a curling free-kick, but it was not enough to prevent Vanuatu finishing bottom of the group with three defeats from their three outings.

Action in South Korea is scheduled to continue tomorrow when Groups C and D conclude.

Group C sees Costa Rica face Zambia at the Cheonan Sports Complex and Portugal go up against Iran at the Incheon Stadium.

Zambia have already qualified and know a draw will secure top spot. 

It is all to play for between the three other sides with Iran on three points and Portugal and Costa Rica both on one each.

Uruguay’s clash with South Africa at the Incheon Stadium and Japan’s meeting with Italy at the Cheonan Sports Complex make up the Group D line-up.

Like Zambia, Uruguay have already qualified and know a draw will guarantee first place.

Italy will clinch second spot with a draw against Japan, who must win to ensure their progression.

Both teams are currently on three points with Italy on a goal difference of plus-one and Japan on minus-one.

Pointless South Africa could still snatch third place on goal difference if they beat Uruguay and the match between Italy and Japan ends in defeat for one of the two sides.
