The flame of the 2017 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) has arrived in the host city of Győr in Hungary.

The reception ceremony at Pér Airport featured appearances from a squadron of the Hungarian Air Force, known as the SAM WING 12 "Arrabona", and the Tata Garrison Army Band.

Among those accompanying the arrival of the flame was Győr Mayor Zsolt Borkai, the President of the Organising Committee.

He was joined by ambassadors of different sports such as gymnasts Krisztián Berki and Krisztofer Mészáros, handball players Anita Görbicz and Tamara Pál, and swimmers Zsuzsanna Jakabos and Bence Varga.

Others include judokas Hedvig Karakas and Richárd Sipőcz, cyclists Johanna Kitti Borissza and Márton Füri, basketball player Anna Laklóth, hammer thrower Krisztián Pars and runner Luca Lendvai.

The ceremony followed the lighting of the Torch in Rome on Tuesday (May 23).

Residents from Győr could see the ceremony in Italy’s capital and the reception at Pér Airport via recording, and they were greeted by Borkai.

A national tour is scheduled to start on Saturday (May 27).

The 2017 EYOF will see competition held in 10 sports between July 23 and 30 this year.

"We needed a vast amount of work and collaboration to be able to say that 60 days before the event the preparations are well advanced, great facilities are being built, the organisation is in progress and now the flame can be here with us," Borkai said.

"We could experience such moments in Rome that we will remember forever and we would like to hand over this feeling to every single Hungarian today and during the countrywide flame-running as well."

Hungarian folk singer Ági Szalóki and the Győr Ballet participated in the reception programme which saw the pilot flame placed on the installation in front of the Győr Town Hall by Borkai.

At the end of the ceremony, Hungarian band The Biebers sang the official song of the EYOF.

Speaking about the ceremony, two-time Olympian Görbicz said: "I could live through a lot of beautiful moments in my life, some of which are connected to the Olympic Games, and this day will definitely belong to them.

"Taking part in the Olympics cannot be compared to anything, and it is a fantastic thing that thousands of young people can experience this feeling here in Győr."

Berki, who won pommel horse gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, added: "To participate in the ceremony was a wonderful feeling.

"I as an Olympic champion shudder to think that we can be part of an Olympic event in Hungary."

A total of 3,000 athletes between the ages of 14 and 18 will compete in Győr.

A winter version of the EYOF has already been held this year, in Turkish city Erzurum in February.
