Steve Wijler produced another shock victory by beating world champion Kim Woojin to win the men's individual recurve title at the Archery World Cup in Shanghai.

The Dutchman continued his form after defeating another South Korean in three-time Olympic medallist Im Dong Hyun in the semi-finals.

He began the final with scores of 29 and 28 to take the opening two sets for a 4-0 lead.

After a brief wobble in the third, he produced three perfect 10s in the fourth to seal the match 6-2.

The win was made all the more amazing considering the 20-year-old was making his senior World Cup debut.

"I definitely didn't expect to win," Wijler said.

"I was coming here thinking that if I made the top 32 or something then it would be okay.

"It's really special for me, I was just shooting and having fun."

Im bounced back from his semi-final defeat by beating Dutchman and Rio 2016 fourth-place finisher Sjef van den Berg for bronze in five sets, 7-3.

South Korean success had been guaranteed in a women's final between two of the nation's strongest archers.

London 2012 winner Ki Bo Bae won a battle between the two most recent individual Olympic champions after facing Rio 2016 victor Chang Hye Jin.

Ki, also the reigning world champion and Rio bronze medallist, recovered from missing the time limit to release her arrow in the second set to dominate the second half of the contest.

She won the third, fourth and fifth sets for a 7-3 victory.

"I thought, before entering the arena, that it was going to be an interesting match because Chang and I are both Olympic champions," the winner said.

"Last year in Rio she beat me in the semi-finals, so it was my time to take revenge."

Japan's Hayakawa Ren beat Ksenia Perova of Russia 7-3 for bronze.

Russia won the women's team competition with a 6-2 victory over United States.

China thrashed Malaysia 6-0 for bronze.

South Korea had suffered a surprise loss to Russia in the quarter-finals.

The country did enjoy victory in the corresponding men's final, however, after a narrow 5-4 win over Kazakhstan.

Japan beat France 5-3 for bronze.
