The American women's ice hockey squad have claimed the team prize in the United States Olympic Committee's Best of April awards.

The accolade comes after they won the World Championship title on home ice in Plymouth, ending the tournament undefeated after five matches.

Glory was sealed after a 3-2 victory over rivals Canada in the final, as the US won the event for the fourth time in a row.

It was their first world title in front of their own supporters.

The individual prizes for April were won by equestrian athlete McLain Ward and wheelchair racer Amanda McGrory.

Ward clinched the men's prize after winning the International Equestrian Federation's World Cup Jumping Final on board HH Azur in Omaha.

McGrory was named as the women's winner after setting an American record in the Boston Marathon of 1 hour 33min 13sec.

She finished second in the US city behind Manuela Schär of Switzerland.

Six days later, McGrory also finished second at the London Marathon to claim back-to-back silver medals.

The Team USA awards are supported by presenting partner Dow, as well as DICK'S Sporting Goods and USG.

Each national governing body may nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline each month.

After the entries are whittled down, votes from governing bodies and members of the media account for half of the final tally.

The remaining 50 per cent is decided by online fan voting.

All of the monthly winners are then considered for yearly prizes.
