World Karate Federation (WKF) vice-president William Millerson has become the President of the Parliament of Curaçao.

He was confirmed as the new leader on Thursday (May 11) during a ceremony on the Caribbean island, which is ruled by The Netherlands.

Millerson, who is also the Honorary President of the Pan American Karate Federation, was sworn in by Lucille George-Wout, the governor of Curaçao, and is due to serve a four-year term.

An eighth-dan black belt, Millerson won medals at European and World Championships during his competitive career.

He joined the WKF Executive Committee in 1994 and four years later was elevated to the vice-president position.

Alongside his role in the WKF, the 64-year-old is also the Olympic Committee of the Netherlands Antilles President.

He also leads the Curaçao Federation of Sports.

Karate is due to make its debut at the Olympics Games at Tokyo 2020.
